Moscow Mule

Ingredients:
4cl Smirnoff vodka
100ml ginger beer (available from Asian food stores)
1 lime
1 dash Angostura bitters
7–8 ice cubes

Preparation:
Cut the lime into eight wedges and drop into a copper mug or large tumbler. Crush slightly with a muddler or the back of a barspoon. Add the ice cubes and top up with vodka and ginger beer. Finish with a dash of Angostura bitters and stir once.

The Moscow Mule is the perfect cocktail for those occasions when you want to party all night. It’s easy to prepare, uses just a few ingredients, and is really refreshing without being too strong.

History:
The invention of the Moscow Mule in 1941 made Smirnoff vodka famous almost overnight in the United States. As the first-ever vodka cocktail, the Moscow Mule – originally made with ginger beer and later with 7 Up – kicked off the cocktail boom in America in the 1950s. Very soon, vodka cocktails were to be found on every good drinks list around the world. Many celebrities of the day, including Groucho Marx, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Woody Allen, featured in advertising campaigns promoting Smirnoff vodka and the Moscow Mule. Woody Allen was a particular fan of the cocktail – the world’s most famous neurotic regularly held “Smirnoff Mule Parties” where he served the cocktail in traditional copper mugs.
